Meyer Vacation Rental is a company that prides itself on its quality customer service. I interviewed Jay-son Owens, an Area Manager with Meyer. We discussed his job and the type of environment he works in.
Can you tell me a little about yourself, and your job description?
I’m 43 years old; I have been in management for about 20 years. I am the Area Manager of Orange Beach and Perdido key. My job is to hire, teach, train, and mentor employees with the following overall objective: being able to provide a clean and enjoyable property for our guests and owners alike.
How long have you worked with Meyer?
I have been with Meyer for about six years.
Do you have any tips for anybody looking to apply with your company?
My advice would be not to strive to be better than someone else, but try everyday to be a better person than you are now. We all have room to improve. Be open to learn!! Everyone out there can teach us something, some of it good and some of it bad, but is all valuable.
What is the company and team culture like?
We are a little more like a family because of the we work we do; we are all fairly close. We have several more values but the main one is to treat everyone with care, respect, and fairness.
On a scale of 1-10, what would you say your customer service is?
I would probably say an 8 or to be exact, 8.6. At least that is what our comment score card is. That is the score from our guests and owners combined. Out of our 40,000 or so reservations each year, we really get less than 10% complaints called in. That’s pretty good in our business.
What’s your favorite part about working at Meyer?
It’s working with the people. That’s what I do it for, and Meyer is a great place to do that because of the amount of people we employ.
What does a typical day look like for Meyer employees?
Everyday presents its own challenges, but we spend everyday doing everything we can to give our guests an enjoyable vacation. Every department has its own task, but it’s all about giving our guests the best we can!
Final question, what is it like working for Meyer during one of the busiest times of the year?
Controlled chaos! Our employees don’t stop moving for the entire day, at times they literally have to run to get the job done.
