Recently The Lion Pride News featured a news segment from a website called code.org, and everybody in my home room had their jaws wide open. Some students laughed at the thought of making their own games and computer programs. In fact, this website makes it easier than ever to produce your own games and programs. The only thing you need to know is a little bit of math. Code.org has taught over 1,922,485 people to code.
Learning to code allows you to choose from so many different career fields. From Computer Programing to Software Engineering, this website can teach you the basics to land a $58K a year job. That’s nearly three times as much as the minimum wage salary in Alabama! With jobs getting increasingly harder to find, this is one quick and easy way to get your foot in the door to a good paying reliable job.
With technology changing so quickly, even 6-8 year olds can learn the first few courses of coding within 30 minutes. It takes only an hour to go through all of the courses if you’ve gone through eight years of school. In this time span, you can make over twenty different games, including remakes of some of your favorite titles. Imagine remaking Flappy Bird, Black Ops and Plants Vs. Zombies.
There are a lot of positive uses for coding in our technological society.
But, as with everything, there is a good and a bad side to coding. Some of the best coders often are dissatisfied with their income. They are angered that OS (Operating Systems) are not updating their protection software. Everything that can be gotten on the Internet can be gotten for free. Big groups use coded software to steal information for their own personal use. They can also use these programs to crack into games and other software.
Hacking has been at the front of illegal crimes, even though we don’t always see it. They can steal identities with the push of a button, yet we continue to lose lives in wars. Hackers can see where they are going to attack before they ever do. Don’t you see some importance for hacking in the military and security agencies? Coders and Hackers are the same people, just with different personalities.
Coders and hackers can both create programs that make the Internet better and safer, so both sides should reunite to create a faster, safer, and more effective Internet!
