The Alternative Movement: In the United States, a new genre of music is becoming popular.
Alternative bands have begun to gain more and more attention due to the emotional, passionate sound. The songs are often calmer, less headache-inducing, and more thought out than other genres.
Alternative music’s emergence into people’s music libraries has been helped along by covers of alternative songs by mainstream artists. Ellie Goulding, a popular British pop artist famous for her song “Lights,” covered Alt-J’s “Tesselate,” gaining the unknown alternative band a lot of airtime.
Another way that alternative music is discovered is alternative artists covers of popular songs. Moby cover’s Johnny Cash’s legendary hymn “God’ll Cut You Down” in a groovy, alternative manner that adds another layer to the music. In addition, a very popular alternative band, Mumford and Sons, have also booked music festivals such as Bonnaroo in Tennessee.
Another reason alternative bands are becoming popular is that teens feel an association with many of their songs, leaving the listener feeling a better connection to the music when they understand the allusions to other songs. Alt-J does this in almost all of their songs, for example “Bloodflood” takes the chorus of their most popular song, “Fitzpleasure.” Alt-J fans enjoy these references, as it gives off a feel of inclusion when references are understood.
Mumford And Sons
Alternative music has begun to gain some new light in our crazy, super-fast culture due to it’s slower, more passionate sound. Bands like Alt-J, Mumford and Sons, and The xx have been able to brand their music with soothing guitar chords and lyrical medleys.
