Get to know Foley High School Class of 2002 alumna Rachel Baker.
Did you have favorite classes or favorite teachers?
I loved weight training and athletics. I had it every semester all four years. I also really enjoyed Algebra 2. Mrs. Wood was a great teacher and we had the best class. Ms. Owen was always a favorite of mine.
Did you do go prom?
Yes, my senior year.
Did you do any extracurricular activities?
I played varsity soccer, cross-country and track all four years. As well as basketball through my junior year. I swam on the swim team my senior year, and was on the weight lifting team my sophomore through senior year. I was the treasurer of the National Honor Society my senior year and was in it for 3 years. I also was involved in Interact and Key Club throughout my four years. I also played on a club soccer team in Pensacola my junior and senior years.
Do you have any good stories to share?
I was a junior in high school when the tornado came through Foley. I remember telling the class to look at a light pole in the student parking lot that was swaying like crazy and how dark the sky had gotten. That was pretty memorable. We also had the best cross-country teams ever in high school. Our girls team in 1999 won the county championship with a perfect score (we had all 5 runners come in places 1-5). We also got 3rd in the state that year too.
Where did you go to college?
University of Montevallo. Graduated in 2007 with my degree in Business Management. I played soccer for the university as well.
Why did you choose to become an educator?
After graduation, I didn’t know what I wanted to do. I was thinking about getting my master’s in criminal justice. But, a good friend of mine’s mom was the supervisor over History and she asked if I would be interested in teaching business classes in the county. I interviewed at Robertsdale High School where they had a position open and I got hired on the spot.
If you could go back and relive your youth, would you do anything differently?
Probably not, except maybe play basketball my senior year.
What do you miss about high school?
Not a whole lot; especially seeing how it is now. I am so glad we did not have Facebook or even carry our cell phones everywhere. I left mine in my car and only turned it on when I left my house in the morning and when I left school in the afternoon.
Do you have a most embarrassing moment? None that I can think of.
