Pets are cute and adorable, but are teens really mature and responsible enough to take care of a pet on their own?
Why should teens have pets? Teens should have pets because owning a pet will teach them to be more responsible. There are also health benefits that come with owning a pet such as:
- lower stress levels
- lower blood pressure
- lower chance of anxiety
- lower risk of depression
Dogs make great best friends because they won’t judge you, and they love you unconditionally. I can tell you from my personal experience that these points are true. Many times that I’ve been upset about something, my dogs would come and lay their heads in my lap and give me a look as if they understood my feelings. These dogs are my best friends, and I feel as if I could trust them with just about anything that has been troubling me.
Dogs are great listeners as well as stress relievers. Relieving stress with a pet is as simple as laying on the floor with them and petting them, or even going outside and playing fetch for an hour or so. Without my two knucklehead dogs in my life, I don’t know where I’d be right now. Depression can sometimes be a large part of being a teen, and owning a pet would greatly benefit teenagers in a positive way. How can a dog reduce depression you might ask? Dogs reduce depression by simply being there for their owners when they’re feeling down about themselves.

When thinking about owning a pet, you must also consider the cons that come with it. One major prohibitive issue is the cost. Pets have large expenses such as needing food, collars, medication, and many other necessities. You should think of these things well in advance before getting a pet. If you get a puppy, it has to be potty trained and as they get older, they have to be walked every day. You have to pick up after it. Having a pet is in some ways just like having a baby, and that’s a lot to ask of many teens.
Pets can a great responsibility, but they can also add a tremendous amount to the life of a teen.
